Ace Combat 7 : Skies Unknown
A game that often flies under the radar, but one of my all time favourites is almost ten year old now and was the last true instalment for the Ace Combat franchise has now given birth to an adrenaline shot to the veins of the most passionate pilots. I'm of course am talking about Ace Combat 6, which released on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 finally has a next generation game for the next generation consoles.
Ace Combat 7, which was released yesterday on consoles and due the 2nd February on PC) is the latest instalment in a game franchise that has, despite being labelled as a combat flight simulator, is truly just an excuse to rain down holy hell against land sea and air as an ace pilot. Using beautiful cinematic's to tell the story of the fictional world around you while you fly under the radar or engage in brutal dogfights against advanced drone control aircraft this is simply one of the most stunning games graphically, i have seen to date.
But enough posturing and let’s get into the facts of the point……
Without including potential DLC in the future, so far 25+ different aircraft have been confirmed to be thrown at you for your pleasure in Ace Combat 7. The series has always prided itself on the detail and authenticity of the craft for you to use and abuse to your hearts content, but with the advances of the next gen consoles they have managed to throw in some surprising treats for you.
Engagements and missions are susceptible to dynamic weather changes, so one moment your about to duck into a fight with an enemy squadron in clear skies over the blinding reflection of the sunlight hitting the waves across the sea below, then rain wind and even lighting clouds your vision, control and can even assist you against enemies when in a particularly difficult dogfight. Lightning strikes are a real concern for the enemy but the chances of it hitting them or you and the damage caused to you is so far uncertain however nearby strikes can affect your HUD and scramble your senses while on the hunt.
Good news for PlayStation players is that you will be able to experience this in virtual reality, however it will only be for 3 missions. Doesn’t sound like much but due to the games and consoles limited capabilities this is all we have, but depending on the success of Ace Combat 7 we may be seeing a trend of more and more VR games hitting the market with the next generation games and console. Personally I couldn’t imagine anything better that being that involved in the game that you actually feel motion sickness pulling a few G’s as you pull out of a nose dive and slip between buildings in a heavily built up city.
Of course the new game will be utilising both consoles and PC’s online capabilities for multiplayer with team death match style battles being slogged out through the skies as well as free for all modes. Eight players will be bringing the A game to the skies with the usual smattering of emblems and customisation options to make sure everyone knows who the true champion of the skies is.
Beautiful aircraft at your disposal, intricate story lines of a fictional world at war with multiplayer and a dog fighting theme over true simulation, what more could you want?
See you in the skies.
