ATO - Order of The Purple Heart TG Sphinx

Tactical Gaming has lost one of their own, TG Sphinx, on November 14th. He has been awarded The Order of The Purple Heart for his dedication and love of all things TG. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts.

Rest in Peace TG Sphinx

To all who shall see these presents, greeting:
Know Ye, that reposing special trust and confidence in the fidelity and abilities of

@TG Sphinx

I hereby award one Instance of the Order of the Purple Heart

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of TG Sphinx on November 14th, 2023.  Life is a precious thing, and you often meet impactful folks who inspire you to be better. TG Sphinx, the man, the Marine, was such a person to look up to. He was the embodiment of dedication, loyalty, selfless service with a ton of care for others around him.
TG Sphinx has been a valued member and friend to many of us inside of Tactical Gaming.  He spent nearly ten years gaming with all of us.  He was the type of person that would give you the honest feedback you requested, even if it was not something you wanted to hear.  His intentions were always focused on impacting others around him first. He is one of the most selfless folks I served with during my time inside of Tactical Gaming.
May we all put TG Sphinx family in our thoughts over the coming months.  We lost a rock star "noob tube, rocket launching loving" gamer friend...his family lost a father and spouse.  May he rest in peace and know that we shall meet again. Your spirit and legacy will live on inside of Tactical Gaming.

Given under our hands on this 5th day of December, 2023

Battlefield Recruitment Showdown

Attention Battlefield Division,

In light of a recent push by Tactical Gaming Command to build a culture of active recruitment for the sake of the organization and all members within, we are proud to announce the first-ever recruiting showdown within the Battlefield Division.

@TGxN1ck is challenging every squad within the division to a recruiting contest that ends on midnight, New Year's Eve, EST. The concept is relatively straightforward.

Any squad that can collectively recruit more people by midnight on New Year's Eve than TGxN1ck has in the same period of time wins free battle passes for the current or upcoming season. Only players who recruit at least one individual can receive this prize, even if their squad wins.

If TGxN1ck recruits more members during this period than any individual squad, he will be awarded a single copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (gasp!) and no battle passes will be distributed.

Squad staff within the division are expected to discuss this recruiting showdown with their squads, as victory almost certainly depends on full participation.  Remember that only members who recruited at least one individual can receive their battle pass in the event that their squad wins.

A successful recruit is defined as one who has not attended any practices before Sunday, November 5th, and attends their first practice by New Year's Eve. A total of four practices must be attended by this member by January 8th to be counted. Non-Battlefield Division recruits will be counted, but it is the responsibility of the recruiting member to ensure that these recruits are counted by contacting TGxShadowghost. A single recruit can only be attributed to a single recruiting member. Be sure to use your individual referral link to ensure that you are being credited for your contributions. In the case that a mistake is made, notify CoC.

Squad totals for individual recruits are counted as the total number recruited by individuals who performed the recruiting while a member of that squad. To clarify, moving squads does not mean your recruit count is transferred to the new squad.

This event is being co-sponsored by TGxN1ck and @TGxShadowghost

Let's get to it!

Should AAA Developers Follow in Disney's Footsteps?

Over the last decade of major releases, public opinion of AAA game developers has dropped significantly. Loot crates, game-completing paid DLC, and recent titles starting at $70USD have all been met with vast criticism, yet companies have maintained their courses and continued with these practices. The developers have expressed that the cost of game development has risen sharply during this same time period, which necessitates that they charge more for the same levels of content.

As developers struggle to release finished games, one has to wonder what they are doing wrong. A recent interview with Disney CEO Robert Iger opened our eyes to greater issues throughout the entertainment industry as a whole. With the increasing rates of production for both the Marvel and Star Wars brands, Iger has publicly recognized that the excess spending on new content is taking a massive toll on the company’s profits.

“I’m really pleased that the support that I’m getting from the content creators of the company is significant and real, and it comes in the form of reducing the expense per content, whether it’s a TV series or a film, where costs have just skyrocketed in a huge way and not a supportable way in my opinion. They all agree to that,” he said at a Morgan Stanley Conference.

It would seem that the incredible budgets allotted to recent Disney productions are not consistently producing adequate returns, which has led the CEO to question the recent spending habits on CGI and other effects. Thinking back on how this may relate to the game development industry, there might be a few valuable takeaways.

“Cyberpunk 2077” was released in a state that was widely regarded as sub-standard for the same studio that produced “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”. While the game was absolutely gorgeous, widely diverse, and highly customizable, the technical issues were impactful enough for many buyers to put their controllers down and request refunds.

How does a well-renowned game studio disappoint with a high-budget, highly-anticipated game launch? Perhaps, like Disney, they were devoting too many resources towards excess features. While the game might be visually stunning, there is little value to graphics that the average gamer’s console or computer cannot run properly. These graphics also create a sort of gilding effect when players are being thrown by their own vehicles, watching NPCs disappear, and struggling to bypass unfinishable missions. Perhaps a reallocation of development resources would improve the overall quality of finished products.

Would it be beneficial for AAA studios like CD Projekt RED, Bethesda, Bioware, and DICE to consider toning down their effects and visuals in exchange for reduced technical flaws, expanded stories, and lower costs? Let us know what you think!

Ark 2: Stuck in Limbo?

With the recent push for recruiting and expansion within the Tactical Gaming community comes a search for new titles to bring to Vanguard. While some promising titles have been tried and turned out not to be great fits for the organization (Hunt, Valorant, Division, etc) the majority of 2023 releases were simply incompatible with coordinated gaming.

Releases like Starfield, Baldur’s Gate, Diablo, Legend of Zelda, and Dead Space have rocked the gaming industry this year, diverting the average player’s attention away from competitive team-based titles. While I personally have been relieved to see a resurgence in the single-player and cooperative genres, this has not been conducive to the growth of TG.

The search for new titles to introduce has revealed that some of the most compatible games simply aren’t here yet, which has us optimistically looking forward to 2024 with wide eyes. One title that I have been watching like a hawk is Ark 2, but its future is uncertain at best. The sequel to one of the greatest open-world survival games ever released should be an easy pick for our next big title, but that can only happen if it is released in a playable state (or at all).

Originally set to release in 2022 but pushed back twice to an unspecified date in late 2024, Wildcard Studios has stated that the delays were “for the betterment of the final product.” To be fair, any studio that can admit its own shortcomings and address them pre-release deserves to be credited for doing so, but a roughly 48-month delay is cause for concern. As of late October 2023, the studio has still not announced a release date for the following year, indicating a lack of certainty that could spell trouble.

In addition to the lack of a clear release date, the absence of gameplay footage is also troubling to many Ark fans. While cinematic trailers featuring Vin Diesel are visually appealing, the studio has failed to release even a single clip or screenshot of actual gameplay. PCGamesN reports that this is because the game “simply isn’t ready yet,” which brings to question whether a title that is entirely unready for visual presentation can be ready for release within a year.

Diving into the potential causes of Wildcard’s delays is not a difficult task by any means. To start, the studio is not working on a sequel to Ark: Survival Evolved in the typical sense. Rather than maintaining the majority of the original game’s mechanics and focusing primarily on developing a new story/setting, the developer is essentially rebooting the game entirely.

Anyone familiar with Ark knows that it is primarily a first-person survival game with rugged combat and building systems similar to Rust. Ark 2, on the other hand, will be a third-person exclusive title with “souls-like combat” and parkour-adjacent movement systems. This is an absolutely massive shift in gameplay mechanics which, tied with the decision to utilize Unreal Engine 5, puts an immense amount of work on the shoulders of its developers. It is worth noting that Wildcard partially credited the well-being of its development team as a cause for the most recent release date setback.

In addition to purely mechanical changes to the Ark title, Wildcard Studios is also proudly pursuing other significant improvements on the original title. Component-based crafting, dynamic world events, advanced template building/sharing, and sensory-based creature AI are but a few of the massive improvements prophesied on the official Ark blog.

As if the massive mechanical overhaul and vast array of gameplay improvements weren’t enough, Ark 2 will be deviating from the primarily unguided storyline in Ark: Survival Evolved by following an epic storyline starring Vin Diesel. Hired to both lead creative development and to star in the game as legendary Ark hero Santiago, the Fast Franchise star is surely putting his best foot forward to ensure the delivery of a high-quality product.

Ark 2 undoubtedly has the potential to redefine the survival genre and raise the bar for all future games of its likeness. By combining souls-like combat, parkour movement, and Ark’s own survival-builder mechanics, this title could blow every competitor out of the water and set the foundation for years of expansions and additional releases. The major concerns associated with this title are the repeated delays, massive mechanical overhauls, utilization of Unreal Engine 5, and potential marketing complications associated with deviating too much from the previous title.

As of now, Ark 2 is an enigma of sorts. Few studios have attempted to make such great leaps as Wildcard has with this new title, and fewer have succeeded. Now all we can do is hope that the studio is able to complete the game before running out of money, and without making major sacrifices to the quality of the finished product.

What do you think about the current direction Wildcard is taking with Ark 2? Let us know in the comments below!

Call of Duty Recruiting Contest

MODERN WARFARE III RECRUITING CONTEST

The day draws near for the release of the newest Call of Duty Title, Modern Warfare III.  The excitement of diving into a new Call of Duty title is building while we anxiously wait for November 10th release date to arrive. But for Tactical Gaming members, there is cause to have additional excitement with the prospect of winning CoD points to use in conjunction with the new release.  With the launch of the next Call of Duty Title, Modern Warfare III, Tactical Gaming (courtesy of SenileSarge) will be having a recruiting contest! The additional CoD points will certainly be a welcomed prize for those current members who successfully recruit new players to join our community.

Recruiting during a title release is the most advantageous time to find new players to join a community like Tactical Gaming. So why not invite new players to join TG while also having the opportunity to increase your Call of Duty bank account? The top prize within this contest is an incredible 2400 CoD points for the winner, AS WELL AS a member the winner designates! So recruiting new members will certainly be worth the time and effort.  If questions arise of how to execute recruiting techniques, remember there are resources to assist with the process of recruiting (TG Recruitment Handbook &  Call of Duty Recruiting Handbook). Please see the below announcement for the contest’s particular rules, guidelines and of course PRIZES!!!!

Good Luck and happy hunting!

Call of Duty MWIII
Recruitment Contest

MWIII is releasing on November 10, 2023.  As we lead up to this date, we are going to open up a recruiting contest for the membership across Tactical Gaming. Your challenge is to find quality members to join Tactical Gaming and help us grow the Division.  You can use the TG Recruitment Handbook or the Call of Duty Recruiting Handbook to help guide you on recruiting folks.

Below are details about the recruitment contest.

General Rules:
Recruitment contest will be open from November 1, 2023 through December 5, 2023
When a member joins they need to add your name to the referral area or use your link
To get credit for the recruit, they must complete at least 4 practices with the squad.  This means, they must be present at practice.  Being excused or AWOL will not count.
Call of Duty Staff and TG Leadership will keep a spreadsheet to track recruits as they enter into the organization.  This is a manual process that will be kept during the recruitment contest.
Prizing:
The following prizing will be provided after the completion of the recruitment contest.  Understand that we may delay prizing if the requirement for a member to meet 4 practices takes longer than expected.  Our goal is to provide prizing as quickly as possible.
Tactical Gaming members that recruit 5 or more recruits, will get 500 Call of Duty Points (Limited to 5)
Tactical Gaming members that recruit 10 or more recruits, will get 1100 Call of Duty Points (Limited to 5)
Top Recruiter (has the most recruits at the end of the contest) gets 2400 Call of Duty Points and can pick one other member inside of Tactical Gaming to receive 2400 Call of Duty Points.

4th Edition of the Monthly Who's Who

Welcome to the 4th Edition of the new series, Who's Who?

In this series, I get the honor of interviewing members throughout the different Divisions of Tactical Gaming. This interview will focus on the members views and feelings on gaming.

Today, I have the great pleasure of interviewing the Battlefield Division Officer (DO) @Just An Enigma

TG Sphinx:  Can you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your gaming background?

Just An Enigma:  My name is Enigma. I’m a life-long gamer, though I fell headfirst into the FPS world circa 2009. I discovered online multiplayer with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which completely altered my gaming trajectory. I’ve been hooked on the FPS genre ever since. In 2011, I discovered a game called Battlefield 3. With a waning interest in CoD (around Black Ops 2 era), and a growing excitement about the more deliberate, tactical nature of Battlefield, I made the switch.

TG Sphinx:  How did you become a part of Tactical Gaming?

Just An Enigma:  I was messaged on Battlefield 4 by a TG recruiter.

TG Sphinx:  What motivated you to become more involved in the community?

Just An Enigma:  I had been involved in gaming groups in the past. But I was greatly unhappy with the rampant sexism, racism, homophobia, ableism, and other unpleasantries that pervaded the online gaming sphere – and the FPS world especially. I had all but given up on clans, as I would much rather just play solo than listen to that kind of toxic rhetoric. When I was recruited to TG, I discovered that there was a regulations page, and I went directly to it (I don’t think I was even instructed to do so). There, I found what appeared to be a set of values in line with my own, which was by far the thing that mattered to me the most. This provide me with the encouragement to actually stick around and see if I could make a home here. That was in 2015. And I'm still here.

TG Sphinx:  Can you share any notable experiences or memories you've had while being a part of Tactical Gaming?

Just An Enigma:  There are very few people left who could appreciate this. But the epic internal TDM competition back on BF1 in XB1 Brigade. Those rounds were epic. You had to be there.
I also have fond memories of my first promotion to CoC. I spent a considerable amount of time drafting up weekly lesson plans for my squad as SL, back when we ran drills before public matches (and drills could be very hit or miss). I’m happy to say that they mostly hit. Many times, we had more fun in private servers honing some of our more niche skills than playing in pubs.

TG Sphinx:  Which division of Tactical Gaming are you a part of, and what drew you to it?

Just An Enigma:  I’m a member of Battlefield Division, because Battlefield is my favorite game. I have been in this division for the entirety of my 8+ year tenure in TG.

TG Sphinx:  How does your division contribute to the overall TG community?

Just An Enigma:  We are one of the longest-running divisions in TG, making us part of the backbone of the community. We have consistently served as model representatives of TG and have remained steadfast through many changes.

TG Sphinx:  Can you share any accomplishments or milestones your division has achieved?

Just An Enigma:  Battlefield Division has produced many pivotal leaders in the community throughout the years, all the way to the upper echelons of CoC. We have also withstood a great deal of adversity, both within TG and as a gaming franchise, but we have always stood firm and never closed down.

TG Sphinx:  What inspired you to take on a staff role within Tactical Gaming?

Just An Enigma:  I was approached directly by my PL to take up an SS position. I felt that I had the ability to make a positive contribution to my squad through sound leadership, as well as uphold/cultivate the values of TG.

TG Sphinx:  What are your responsibilities as a staff member, and how do you contribute to the community?

Just An Enigma:  I have held every position in TG from SA up to DO, so I have undertaken every responsibility that these positions entail. I continue to perform administrative duties to varying degrees from the SS up to the DO level, especially in light of limited staffing.

TG Sphinx:  Can you discuss any challenges or rewarding experiences you've encountered in your staff position?

Just An Enigma:  Limited staffing has been an ongoing challenge, but seeing the Division bounce back from one of the most divisive entries into the franchise to date has been a pretty rewarding thing to see.

TG Sphinx:  What are your favorite types of games, and why?

Just An Enigma:  FPS games. I like the competitive multiplayer aspect and the general mechanics. CoD Black Ops 1 and Battlefield 1 are perhaps two of my all-time favorite games.

TG Sphinx:  Can you share any memorable moments or achievements?

Just An Enigma:  The most memorable moments are simply enjoying the company of friends :)

TG Sphinx:  Are there any particular game genres or styles that you'd like to explore more in the future?

Just An Enigma:  Prior to becoming a near exclusive FPS gamer, I had a pretty eclectic taste in games. Everything from RPGs (Final Fantasy 7, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Age, Pokémon) to sports games (Madden, NBA 2K, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, WWE games), racing games (Gran Turismo, Need 4 Speed), and action-adventure games (Grand Theft Auto, Fallout). One day, when circumstances change, I may broaden my catalog once again.

TG Sphinx:  How do you actively engage with other members of Tactical Gaming?

Just An Enigma:  I am active with my division members by attending practices pretty regularly. It has always been important to me to remain boots-on-the-ground no matter how high I ascend in the CoC.

TG Sphinx:  Have you made any long-lasting friendships within TG?

Just An Enigma:  Yes.

TG Sphinx:  Are there any initiatives or events you've participated in to foster a sense of community?

Just An Enigma:  So many throughout the years. From internal/external competitions to recruitment events and ATC development, as well more special initiatives, such as creating detailed guides to aid in FTLing and general tactics.

TG Sphinx:  How has being a part of Tactical Gaming helped you grow as an individual?

Just An Enigma:  Becoming staff has actually helped me move a little outside of my comfort zone in some respects. As an introvert, I am naturally quiet. But I have had to learn how to push myself to be more vocal, particularly as SS with FTL responsibilities.

TG Sphinx:  Have you acquired any new skills or knowledge through your involvement?

Just An Enigma:  To name a few - managing different personalities, being fair yet assertive when needed, conflict resolution, and facilitating mediations.

TG Sphinx:   Can you share any specific instances where you've seen personal improvement within TG?

Just An Enigma:  My leadership and FTLing skills improved significantly and rapidly upon taking over a squad. I was tasked with taking over the reins of a "difficult" squad back in the XBox 360 days, and successfully turned things around. A sink or swim situation that worked out well.

TG Sphinx:  What advice would you give to recruits joining Tactical Gaming for the first time?

Just An Enigma:  Communicate with your SS, keep a cool head, and enjoy yourself.

TG Sphinx:  How can they make the most of their experience and connect with others within TG?

Just An Enigma:  Play with your squad mates outside of practice if possible.

TG Sphinx:  Are there any specific resources or areas they should explore to enhance their journey within Tactical Gaming?

Just An Enigma:  Take some time to chip away at the documentation (FAQs, ranks & awards, etc.) across the site, as well as the general discussions happening in your division on the forums and discord.

TG Sphinx:  What are your aspirations within Tactical Gaming?

Just An Enigma:  I would like to continue to meet new people and form meaningful friendships with fellow gamers.

TG Sphinx:  Do you have any specific goals you want to achieve or contribute towards within TG?

Just An Enigma:  I would like to see Battlefield, and TG as a whole, grow in size. As we grow, I hope to provide stable leadership and advocate for my members to improve their overall gaming experience.

TG Sphinx:  How do you see yourself continuing to be a part of Tactical Gaming in the long run?

Just An Enigma:  I hope to continue my role as Battlefield’s DO. Again, Battlefield is my favorite game, and this division will always be home to me.

Thank you to @Just An Enigma for taking the time to answer these questions.

Stay tuned to the next episode of Who's Who? in another month!

Nostalgia: Narcan for the Soul

The morning I woke up naked on a plastic-covered mattress at 3:00 a.m. was an eventful one. I'd tried ending my life the night before and apparently failed in doing so. Unsure of how I survived the medley of toxic substances I'd consumed, I accepted the situation for what it was. The previous night's desire to never open my eyes again had faded, and it was time to go get some help. Sloppily throwing on my military uniform, I stumbled down the barracks hallway and pounded on my buddy's door to ask him for a ride to the hospital. Twenty minutes later I was in a chair next to a social worker who, based on her facial expressions, couldn't necessarily blame me for trying to do what I did. There was plenty to be done in terms of treatments and medications, but not a whole lot to talk about as far as trying to see the situation differently. What she said next is probably the only reason I didn't try again the next day:

"Right now sucks. I can't fix that, and neither can you. So let's forget about right now, and go back a few years."

She took the next few minutes to elaborate, explaining how indulging in a form of media that I'd enjoyed during happier times could be beneficial in getting me through the next couple of months. She clearly was thinking about books and movies, but I jumped straight to video games. Playing games on personal computers wasn't unheard of in the barracks by any means, and I bought a gaming-capable laptop the next day. After downloading a copy of "ESV: Skyrim" (my favorite game from right before I joined the service), I felt the first specks of joy in weeks. Over the next several months, I found that the social worker couldn't have been more correct. Every time I slayed a dragon or pickpocketed a ruby ring, I felt myself taken back to a happier time in my life - a time when joining the military hadn't even crossed my mind yet. A time when becoming the head of the Thieves Guild was more important than anything. I didn't want to die while I was wielding the Wabbajack, and that's all that mattered.

Let people say what they will about gaming. Playing as a youngster saved my life as an adult. Although I hope nobody reading this will ever need to use gaming in such a capacity, I hope that you'll take a moment to enjoy your game today, for tomorrow's sake.
